This line from Alice in Wonderland haunts me to this day. I won’t name names, but I received an email from a fantastic instructor of mine that admitted of checking into rehab for 28 days last month. I found this shocking because 1-she is a powerhouse online persona, 2-she looks terrific, & 3-she seems to really have her shit together!
However, I found it admirable of her to admit her weakness. We all try to hide behind painted faces, pretty smiles, and pretend life is just a bucket of sunshine. In reality, we all have our struggles or a truckload of strife what have you. So here it is…Hi, my name is Kat, and I’m a freaking disaster. Sure, I hold a job-put a smile on when I want to throat punch someone (okay, maybe no smile but I try my best here), take care of my fur babies, etc.
Do as I Say
I can tell or help anyone get on a budget, fitness program, get organized, and the list goes on. But for me? I’m enrolled in 5 online courses, have three unfinished novels, try to run four online shops, work the family biz, deal with my mates and family’s trials, battle 11 health diseases/disorders, and pay my bills late. W.T.F., you ask?
It’s easier to advise than it is to apply. Yep. There you have it. Do as I say not as I do hypocrite. Well, it’s time to change. It’s time to apply all that fantastic advise, writing, and preaching I do. I can help someone else but when it comes to me…I place dead last.
The reason for this post is to admit to myself I need to change, help others do the same, and hold myself accountable! My goals for the next 6-12 months are:
- Get Healthy & Fit (Finish losing 55 pounds and get in shape)
- Become a Full-Time Writer/Virtual Assistant
- Finish all classes (2 Months?)
- Get Marie Kondo Organized-LOL
- Get out of Debt & build a nest egg
- Travel More
- Pick Up Hobbies I love, such as Photography, Piano, Painting, Gardening, etc.
Do or Diet
If I don’t continue to make massive changes at the rate I’m going; they say my adrenal glands will go into failure or what they call Addison’s Disease. (I’m in Stage 3 or known as Severe Adrenal Fatigue). In June of 2015, I put on 40 pounds in six weeks. Yes, you read that correctly. I was told my bloodwork was pretty standard, and they didn’t know what was wrong. I went a year until I found out I had Hashimoto’s disease. I’ve lost the initial 40 pounds but have another 55 to go. Despite my efforts, I slip up here and there and probably don’t eat enough honestly & when I do, it’s not exactly the right food.
A diet that always worked for me was the 6-Week Body Makeover by Michael Thurmond. It is a bit extreme, so I am going to alter it a bit in hopes of not stressing my Adrenal Glands more. It probably works for me because it is gluten-free, dairy-free, and you eat small portions every 3 hours.
Be a Writer
I’ve wanted to be a writer since I was 20 years old, maybe even 16-to be honest here. My goal is to be able to make a living as a writer by the end of the year. Whether I make it or not who knows. But it’s best to run the race rather than standing on the sidelines.
A quote from my favorite writer Hunter S. Thompson inspires me every single day. “As things stand now, I am going to be a writer. I’m not sure that I’m going to be a good one or even a self-supporting one, but until the dark thumb of fate presses me to the dust and says ‘you are nothing,’ I will be a writer.”-Gonzo Whether I’ll make it or not, I must try. Because you never know what could have been if you don’t try.
Virtual Assistant & Freelance Writer Courses
I tend to get a little enthusiastic when trying to learn new things. I now understand why Gina Horkey from the Horkey Handbook says to focus on one course at a time. You begin to get overwhelmed and rush through rather than applying the fantastic advice & skills that are taught. My goal is to finish up the courses I have enrolled in and get my groove on and launch my business for real in the next 60 days. Get Marie Kondo Organized
I’ve been inspired to do this for a while now. I come from a line of hoarders and mentality that “I might need that, it’s sentimental, or I feel guilty throwing things away.” I want to break this cycle. Clutter causes chaos-and it weighs you down, Literally & physically! Marie Kondo is a revelation and is sweeping the world with her decluttering techniques. She teaches us to surround ourselves with things that only “spark joy.” I highly recommend reading her books The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up & Spark Joy: An Illustrated Master Class on the Art of Organizing and Tidying Up.
She also has a series on Netflix Tidying Up With Marie Kondo that is phenomenal. Try to watch in the mornings because before bed gets you pumped and wanted to organize your entire house immediately. Be patient with yourself because the steps take some time. The point of utilizing this method is to teach you how to surround yourself with joy, simplify your life, and stop the vicious cycle of a chaotic home.
Get Out of Debt
Ah, one of my ultimate enemies-money. It’s not that I’m one of these people that goes out and shops all of the time. I eat out (mainly take-out) most of the time because I tend to be too tired to worry about dealing with grocery shopping (I’m an introvert-bad) & prepping food. But if I would do this, it would save me time & money-talk about ironic. My goal is to utilize buying in bulk, coupons, and prepping food. This way, I can stick with my healthy diet, and save time during the week because my meals will be already made.
I tend to procrastinate a lot. Which leads to paying bills late, Then I’m worse off because I’m paying expensive late fees that I could have stashed away into my savings account. My new method is to pay the bill as soon as I get it even if it’s not due yet. I want to get 1-2 months ahead to prevent stress and unpaid bills. I am also going to begin saving 10% of my weekly pay to build a nest egg. Never had a decent size egg before. LOL-
As of now, I don’t have much money to travel. However, I’ve learned that thanks to sites such as Booking.com & checking out destinations during the “off” season can help you take a holiday without breaking your budget. I honestly can say most of us live in some pretty cool places but get so wrapped up with the everyday hustle we don’t take time out to check out beautiful places in our own state. I am going to start taking one day per week to do something fun locally and want to do a weekend somewhere once a month.
For instance, I live a mile away from South River and barely go to enjoy it at all. So yesterday on a whim we grabbed Chops (our pup) and headed a whopping two miles to a beautiful rocky nook right off the river. I instantly felt calmer and had a blast taking pictures. I even found a clamshell scanning the river bed for rocks and shells. Check my travel post about our afternoon on South River.
Do Something Fun
For some reason, I feel guilty if I take time out for fun things. All work and no play will take a toll on your physical & mental well being. Dr. James Wilson advises for his Adrenal Fatigue Patients (I have been diagnosed with Adrenal Fatigue) that you need to do something you enjoy EVERY DAY! I love to write of course but also enjoy photography, painting, piano, being outdoors, and playing with my fur-babies—to name a few. I am going to schedule in taking time to do something I enjoy because over the last few years I have barely done that at all. I have noticed a downslide in my attitude and energy level because of it.
I want to take up hiking, swimming, and other fun, healthy activities as well. Maybe learn how to dance, I’ve always wanted to skateboard, things like that. Life is to short not to have fun.
